Out Now: Garçons #5

Garçons is a Chilean queer (post-)porn magazine I regularly mention here because I think it’s a nice project. It’s one of the few zines that brings together pictures of people from different genders. Check out the current issue released in November.

Good Blogs: Let’s Play

Let’s Play is the kinkiest, sexiest and most entertaining tumblr I stumbled upon in weeks. I’ve spend minimum half an hour now clicking myself though all 140 pages this site currently has and still feel like I could instantly start over again. Here are a couple of my favourite pictures I found on my journey, although they don’t really represent the collection on the tumblr itself which is a little more explicit. Please let me know if you own the copyrights of one of them.

Trailer: François Sagat In “Homme Au Bain” by Christophe Honoré

This is the trailer of French director Christophe Honoré’s new movie “Homme Au Bain” (engl. title “Man At Bath”) which will be screened at the Locarno film festival as one of the entries of the competition at the beginning of August. It will officially premiere at September 22nd. According to the movie’s festival press kit which is available here (I especially love Francois Sagat’s CV) the film is located both in Gennevilliers in the suburbs of Paris and New York and tells the story of a split-up couple that rediscovers its sexual freedom. I must admit that although I like Honoré’s movies apart from Mr. Sagats appearance the trailer hasn’t really convinced me that I need to see this film (although the fact that the guys over at the Locarno festival warn “sensitive viewers” about “shocking scenes” makes it kind of interesting).

Colby Keller: 90 Types Of Bitches

This video shows porn star Colby Keller (who for some people appears to be the “Definition of Cuteness“) reading out loud a list of 90 Types of Bitches a primary  school  teacher recently found in a 3rd grade (!) classroom and published it on the internet. The pause between 3:14 and 3:50 is a visualization of the part of the list that’s missing.

Watch It Online: “I Want Your Love” By Travis Mathews

I Want Your Love“, a new new short film by indie director Travis Mattews illustrates very explicitely what it could feel like to fuck a good friend after having a few glasses of wine together. Like the movies Mathews shot for his documentary series  “In Their Room” the movie is very tenderly shot, and like other contemporary queer indie movies it combines both narrative and pornographic elements in a way that blurs the borders between a “feature film” and a “porn film”. The whole thing is also part of a bigger film project with the same title Mathews is working on at the moment (the title comes from a song by The Chromatics which is one of that bands that are going to be involved in it). You can watch the entire short for free and in high resolution on NakedSword as well as a little backstage-documentary which features an interview with Mathews. You also find the trailer and some movie stills below. Another interview with Mathews about the movie can be found on Johnny Murdoc’s blog.

Johnny Murdoc On “The Ethics Of Bareback”

“It’s impossible to make porn – or sex of any kind, for that matter – completely safe. It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where sex comes pre-packaged with a slew of potentially dangerous side effects. This is nothing new. The reality of STIs hang over any sexual act. Putting a camera in between the performers and the consumers may protect the consumer, but the consumer was never really at risk anyway. Masturbation is one hell of a safe sex act. Having sex with multiple partners in order to entertain consumers is not. (…) Honestly, if the presence of a condom – in your porn or in your sex life – can derail your sexual enjoyment then you’re doing something wrong.”

Thierry Schaffauser: Time For Porn Stars To Self-Organise

“I wish us porn actors were able to organise ourselves collectively and produce our own films. We could not only film each other, but have control over our own images and improve the quality of our work, because we could spend more and better time doing it. We would be more interested in creating a beautiful and arousing film, rather than just earning money. The workers could share the revenues between ourselves and perhaps porn could be recognised at last as what it should be – an art.” Thierry Schaffauser, president of the GMB/IUSW on working conditions and unsafe sexual practice in gay porn. His complete comment on guardian.co.uk. Thanks, Tim.

William E. Jones: The Retrospective

You know this picture but you have no idea where it’s been taken from? Then I can help you out: It’s a still of a short movie called “The fall of communism as seen in gay pornography” by William E. Jones from 1988. Jones is an artist and filmmaker who grew up in Ohio and now lives in L.A., teaching film history at the Art Center College of Design. His work  is regularly shown in experimental, video, or gay and lesbian film festivals as well as at important art spaces such as the Venice Biennale, the Tate Modern, the Cinématheque Française and others. The reason why I tell you this is because from this Friday on Jones’ complete film work will be shown at New York City’s Anthology Film Archives in a retrospective co-sponsored by MIX NYC, and by the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at NYU. If you’re from New York you find more information about this retrospective on the AFA website and on buttmagazine.com, my source for this post. To all others I recommend Jones’ pretty extensive website to get an impresson of his stuff.

Death Drive: 10 Facts About Paul Morris And His Treasure Island Media Studio

1. Morris was discharged from the Navi for being caught on base at a self-made glory hole.

2. In his essay “No Limits: Necessary Danger in Male Porn” from 1998 compares bareback porn with skateboard videos because “Both represent acts that are essential to the subculture because they are on the edge, because they are dangerous and illegal.”

3. When invited to speak at the 1998 World Pornography Conference in Los Angeles Morris hired an 18 year old skateboarder to deliver this essay and read it for him.

4. For “Breeding Season”, a movie made in 2006, Morris collected 73 shots of cum in a condom which he put into the freezer to turn it into what he called the “Devil’s Dick” – a dildo made of cum.

5. In his article “Unbecoming: Pornography and the Queer Event”, Tufts University professor and queer theory guy Lee Edelman discussed the role of Morris’ pornography as work that “hopelessly heralds the future” of what Edelman calls the “posthumanous”. He compares Morris’ pornography to the film works of both Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michael Haneke.

Out Now: Post / Porn / Politics

P/P/P is based on a symposium that took place at Volksbühne Berlin in October 2008, which brought together different queer/feminist movie makers, performance artists, activists and film scientists which presented their work on the subject of porn. The main approach of the whole event was on the one hand to take porn seriously not only as a genre, but also as a media that most of the time contains and transports ideas of what “right sex” in Western societies is supposed to be. On the other hand it tried to show new ways and strategies to produce “better” porn beyond the mainstream as well as to critically analyze the present and the history of the genre. The reader (which is edited by Tim Stüttgen aka Timi Mei Monigatti who also organized the symposium) combines contributions of a whole bunch of people that are into these kinds of questions such as Beatrice Preciado, Annie Sprinkle, Bruce LaBruce, Terre Thaemlitz and Cosey Fanni Tutti. You find more information about it on the website of b_books where you can also order it. For more information about the contributors check out the website of the symposium.

Vintage Gay Porn Trailer x 2: Inches / A Deep Compassion

Here are two trailers from a time when porn movies actually had something like a story: Steve Scott’s INCHES is a gay porn classic from 1979 and was one of the first longer movies that featured Al Parker (1952-1992) who started off as a butler of Hugh Hefner and became a porn star in the eighties. I found this nice trailer on Colin Quinn’s tumblr and I’m curious how long YouTube is going to keep it online. An explicit version can be found on the webpage of Bijou Video, a vintage porn distributor. On Bijou’s YouTube channel you also find the trailer of A DEEP COMPASSION from 1972. Here a young blind boy is “caught in a web of sin and cruelty” in a dramatic story of “biblical proportions”. Sounds great!

UPDATE: The Bijou Video channel has been deleted by YouTube for showing to much explicit stuff. I tried to find the clips on their website, but the page is also currently down. So at least for now it seems like the trailers are no longer available on the internet.

The second issue features photographs and artwork by Benjamin Fredrickson, Bruce La Bruce (some nice preview pics of Francois Sagat / L.A. Zombie), Joachim Baldauf, Stefan Mosebach et al. and is pretty entertaining. Check it out here (there is a price printed on the front, so I assume it can also be ordered in a printed version, but the site doesn’t say where). Thanks, guys!
