Archive: Hard Ton

Catch Fire took note of my queer-feminist radio show right after it started out, which I suppose is what led to me being a contributor around here (very sporadically, I admit). Compiling a transgenre musical selection every month has kept me up to date with the music scene in Berlin (and beyond), and it’s been fulfilling to provide an outlet for women and queer(-friendly) artists who don’t necessarily get a lot of exposure elsewhere.

“Not Again”-EP out via Toy Tonics (TOYT 001). Check out Hard Ton’s PICK 5 selection from August 2010.

As Discodromo‘s Giovanni revealed in his Expatriarch interview last year, CockTail d’Amore is expanding – the popular Berlin party series hosted by the Italian duo and Berghain resident DJ Boris is now a record label. The first release, a four-track 12″ EP, is set for release on February 16th and features Hard Ton (remixed by Massimiliano Pagliara, whose own debut album is coming this spring), IchiSan, Miss Plug Inn (remixed by Bottin) and José Manuel (remixed by Discodromo). This thing is the rightful heir to Alexander Robotnick’s classic 1985 “Fuzz Dance” compilation and a very promising first step from this new label. You can preview the whole thing here:

By the way, for any Berliner readers, the party’s new scheduling places it at the first Saturday of each month, AKA TONIGHT!, at St. Georg’s in Kreuzberg. Check Discodromo’s Pick 5 for an idea of the kind of music they’re into.

Hard Ton are Max and Mauro, a duo from Venice that manages to melt together three decades of dance music: While in their tracks they mix disco and italo disco with nineties house and chicago house, singer Max’ outfits and his stage appearance make you instantly think of queer icons such as Divine, Leigh Bovery and even Rob Halford (Judas Priest). The guys have recently gotten a lot of attention for the cover of their “Selfish”-E.P. – a remake of Grace Jones’ “Island Life” album cover (remember?). For PICK 5 they have put together a nice collection of their favourite webclips. But see yourself…

Hard Ton from Venice is the guy responsible for the impressive “remake” of the cover artwork  of Grace Jones’ “Island Life” (I recently posted it here). The awesome omg blog just helped me finding out that the picture is the cover of his own E.P. called “Selfish” (via Gigolo Records). More of/about the “biggest disco queen of the 21st century” on her MySpace page.

Took me a while to realize that these two belong together:

Grace Jones: “Island Live”

Hard Ton: “Selfish E.P.”
