Artists That Draw Attention (IV): David Gómez

You may know David Gómez for his colorful portraits of celebrities and his friends. He usually draws them with with felt-tip pens as far as I can tell. I found out about him because he has contributed some of his stuff to Ticket To Hell. If you like his style I especially recomment his blog, on which he not only shows a lot of his work (which as you’ll see doesn’t only consist of the portraits) but also stuff of other nice artists. It’s actually been the inspiration for this series as you’ll see..

Artists That Draw Attention (III): Theo Firmo
Theo Firmo is born in Sao Paulo and today lives in Madrid. You find many of his minimalist drawings on graph paper and pages of old exercise books on blogs and tumblrs these days. Most of them show only of the outlines of the motives. Aside from drawing he’s also doing animated videos like a series of portraits that keep changing throughout a certain amount of time. This is the link to his website.

Artists That Draw Attention (I): John Paul Turlow
In the following days I want to feature some artists that focus on drawings. The first one is John Paul Turlow, a self-proclaimend “Cover Lover”. In his blog he presents drawings of cover artworks of his favourite magazines: “This is an hommage, an attempt to create cover art for every great magazine I own (+ a few I wish I owned). It’s never a straight crib and it’s not about perfection, the source magazines are simply a playground for my imagination.” This is the link to his site.

Fabrice Neaud: Diaries in Black And White

I spent an unusal huge amount of time of my summer holidays in France with something I haven’t done in a while: reading comics. Or BDs, bandes dessinnées, as the French say. The person who brought my interest for the genre back to life is
Fabrice Neaud. His drawn diaries (he calls them “Journals”) are published on a on a small French publishing company called “
ego-comme-X“. The first one of them has been released in the mid-ninties, the last one, No 4, in 2002. Although I can’t always identify with Nead’s first-person narrator I really like the guy’s style: On the one hand it’s very simple and introverted including a lot of text. On the other hand it can be very effectful and sometimes also very sexy. Here are some pages of “Journal” No 1 and 2 I scanned in. The books can be ordered
here.

Good Blog: Gabe’s Yaoi Corner
My original idea was to write something about yaoi-manga and -anime here because (at least in Germany) they have become quite sucessful and I think that they’re a strange phenomena. It’s actually a bit like slash literature – they’re gay comics with mostly androgynous protagonists that are drawn, sold and consumed by girls. But during my research I found this blog which is posting either yaoi and “real” gay porn manga and I got stuck on it because I was surprised how well-done and even sexy some of them are. I also like the range of types of guys and sexual practices. Or did you never want to know what it feels like to have sex with a tiger(-guy)?
UPDATE (09/12/09): Seems like the site is a victim Google’s policy to shut down gay blogs with explicit contents. Sorry, guys.

A Tribute To Bow
Bow is the only guy in
She-Ra’s rebellion troup. If you don’t remember him: He’s the one with the heart-shaped-arrows, the Freddie-Mercury-mustache and the leather boots. His best friend is a little rainbow-colored butterfly/owl-thing with huge ears. And he likes to play the harp and to work out. Honestly, I wouldn’t call him a real object of affection cause he’s also kind of dull (like all characters in this show). Still it’s fun to rediscover him. Sorry I couldn’t embed the videos, I can only post links here.
Here you can see Bow in real action.
I also found a nerdy but kind of entertaining Analysis of the He-Man meets She-Ra movie. (Bow at 3:00)
This is a weird fan video I don’t get cause it’s italian.
And I think I have problems with the agenda of this video.
What’s going on with He-Man we’ll discuss some other time.
