Laurel Halo made a splash in cyberspace last spring by self-releasing the King Felix EP as a free download thru her site. “Metal Confection” was perhaps the standout cut (I featured it on Expatriarch Radio #3), and it later got the remix treatment from fellow prog synthesist Oneohtrix Point Never when Brooklyn label Hippos In Tanks gave the EP a 12″ vinyl release in November. And now, the track gets a visual supplement from Josef Kraska who adds some cyborgasmic flair to Halo’s operatic dreamscapes:
If you like what you hear, then check out her recent remixes for Sébastian Tellier, Brahms and Entepreneurs, as well as mixtape for Self-Titled Magazine — all that should hold you over until Hippos In Tanks releases Laurel Halo’s next EP this spring…
When word first got out about the new Hercules And Love Affair album, Blue Songs, we knew the New York based trio had plans for dance floor domination in 2011. The first single, My House finally has a video and it’ll change the way you think about clubbing. Grinding, hi-top fades and commercial breaks are all encouraged people. Don’t be shy. You watch the video below :
Hooper Place is the best show on TV by DIS Magazine. This is what happens when all your friends are fine and perfect. This level of drama would make Dick Wolf (New York Undercover era) and Aaron Spelling (alive era) very jealous. From a cinematography and production standpoint Hooper Place can be seen as having low production quality. That view is irrelevant because the videos are idea forward. In a practical sense the most important thing is getting your idea out anyways.
“I was at a party hello. It’s 9:30 in the morning.” -Taz (played by Teflar). There is a scene in Episode 2 where everybody gets questioned for a murder. That scene is essential.
I have a feeling episode 3 will be very erotic. Episode 1 Written and Directed by Patrik Sandberg. Episode 2 Directed by Patrik Sandberg and Grant Worth, written by Patrik Sandberg. Watch them below.
Catch Fire will take a break until December 20 – enough time for you, dear followers, to choose your favourite video shown on this site in 2010. Last year I called the voting “Queer Music Video Award“, but I’ve decieded to rename it, since (although I think all videos are queer in one way or another) not all the artists nominated this year actually would consider themselves as “queer”. You find all nominated videos after the poll below the jump or on this page. I hope you enjoy this kind of look back at 2010 as much I did when I did the preselection. May the best one win!

Photographer Nick Knight has directed a short film called “Too Lee, With Love, Nick”, a homage to fashion designer Alexander McQueen. The film has been screened at the British Fashion Council Awards yesterday for the first time and features an unreleased song by Björk, for whom Knight has shot the video to “Pagan Poetry” in 2002.
Next summer The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will show an exhibition entitled “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”, a collection of over 100 of McQueens most important creations. The exhibition will be on display for the public from May 4 to July 31. Via omg blog.
I may be a little late with my fascination, but this really struck me when I saw it the first time this weekend. Camp as hell. Unfortunately her album “Pink Friday” she released two weeks ago is rather crappy.
Oh, and did you know that there’s a pretty entertaining Nicki Minaj contest going on on YouTube right now? It’s especially her rap part in the Kanye West song “Monster” that seems to attract people. Here are a couple of the cutest videos (via Jahn):
Today Hercules and Love Affair‘s label Moshi Moshi Records has made their song „My House“ available as a free download in exchange for an email adress. The song has been published as a stream on the website of the NME (see below as well) on Monday and is definately one of the highlights of the new record “Blue Song”, which will be released on January. And of which I have a digital press copy now.
With the album H&LA move away from disco (although not leaving it behind) and find new influences in acid and other early techno + house tunes, as it can already be heard in the Butler/Foxman collaborations „Creature“ and „What You Need“. But there is also a slower part of the record, a kind of „experimental soft music“, as Butler called it in an interview with Pitchfork from April. Aside from Foxman Butler has also found a couple of new vocalists such as Aerea Negrot, a Berlin-based singer singer, producer and performer from Venezuela, who has already joined the band on their 2009 live tour (check out her last single “All I Want To To” released on bpitch control and watch this portrait by her label for more information), Shaun J Wright, a H&LA fan Butler has turned into a collaborater after seing him in the audience at a live show and Kele Okereke, who is the singer of “Step Up”, a song they have already performed together live in July as you can see in this Youtube video. One last information: “Blue Song” was co-produced by Austrian producer Patrick Pulsinger (at least back in April when Butler did the interview).
Keep posted for an interview with Andrew Butler I will post later this month. And here’s “My House” for all of you who haven’t heard it yet:
Pitchfork is currently featuring a recording of The Knife‘s legendary live show “Silent Shout: An Audio Visual Experience”. The concert has been recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2006 and will be only online for one week. Here’s my favourite part of the show, where they are playing an alternative version of “Heartbeats” with a bass line that reminds of the one in the “Twin Peaks” opening theme. You can watch the complete show here. Via YoungCreature.
+++ 2011 will start with new records by Hercules and Love Affair (“Blue Songs”), MEN (“Talk About Body”) and Toro Y Moi (“Underneath The Pine”). All records will be out in January / February and as you can see above will have nice cover artworks (MEN cover via Expatriarch, Toro cover via XLR8R) +++
+++ Kim Ann Foxman has recorded a free mixtape for The Fader, which includes both her Mr.Intl songs “Creature” and “What You Need”. The tape has been uploaded on Soundcloud by DIY, click here for the original source and the playlist.
