Artists That Draw Attention (VII): Fredster
Frédéric Grançon aka Fredster is an artist based in Paris. If you’re living there or if you’re from Brussels you may know him from the nice drawings he’s done for the third issue of “Le Supi” zine. He’s also part of the team that runs the “Mascara Disporder” queer music blog I already mentioned here. His drawings are minimalist and at the same time very detailed, I’m never really sure if they comfort or disturb me, but I think that’s exactly what makes them so exciting. More of them on his website or his tumblr.
Rewatched: Jeepers Creepers 2
Jeepers Creepers 2 by Victor Salva is definitely not one of the “most unintenionally gay horror movies” ever as proposed in this article. I think you should rather call it one the most intentionally gay horror movie ever produced for a straight audience. A German critic wrote about the film: ‘With this movie Salva seems to exorcise his own demons. With regard to his past as a convicted pedophile (which caused the financial miscarriage of his Disney drama ‘Powder’ ) the character of the Creeper clearly is a metaphor for the destructive power of homosexuality. From this perspective this excellently filmed slasher movie is much more ‘creepy’ than many fans of the genre may realize.’ The movie (no, it’s not a masterpiece but still entertaining) only got 23 out of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Artists That Draw Attention (VI): Alfonso Casas Moreno
Although Mr. Moreno runs three blogs (1, 2, 3) it’s nearly impossible to gather any sort of information about him on the internet. The only thing I’m pretty sure of is that he’s from Spain, but where exactly I can’t tell (his Blogger site sais he lives in Barcelona, in this article of the Spanish newspaper “El Pais” i found on his Facebook page it’s the city of La Coruna). So let’s respect his right to privacy and focus on his drawings. You find more of them on Flickr.
Sissy Nobby & Big Freedia: Bouncing BUTTs
I proudly present Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia, the winners of the “10 Best Butts on the BUTT Blog” competition and two of the most famous rappers of the New Orleans “Sissy Bounce” community. If you haven’t heard of Nobby and Freedia yet – here are a few videos that depict what it means when shaking your ass becomes a political act. You can also check out N&F’s crazy song “Azz Everywhere” on Big Freedia’s MySpace page. By the way: the third one of the videos has been filmed by Slava Mogutin at this year’s Butt Bang! party in New York in June. You can watch more of them on Mogution’s rather unknown Youtube channel. William S. Burroughs: The Documentary
On January 22nd the first posthumous feature film about writer William S. Burroughs called “A Man Within” will debute at the Slamdance Filmfestival in Utah. The independent movie was directed by a 25-year-old Chicago based filmmaker called Yony Leyser and is going to feature “never before seen” footage of Burroughs as well as interviews with his friends and colleagues. The long list of interviewees includes John Waters, Genesis P-Orridge, Laurie Anderson, David Cronenberg, Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant, Sonic Youth (who also did the sountrack) and others, so the whole thing sounds like a really nice project. More about the movie here, an interview with Mr. Leyser here, and if you want to support it by donating click here.
