Poll: Queer Music Video 2009

quermu1

Hey folks, yesterday I had the idea of putting together a little compilation of all the music videos I’ve postet here during my first year of running this blog. I think this year someting like a little revolution for music with a queer/LGBT backround took place if you think about the success of bands like The Gossip Or Grizzly Bear and the amount of really great videos and singles that were released. I decided to make a poll out if this list so we can all re-watch the videos and find out together which ones we like most. It would be great if you’d all join this little experiment and I hope you don’t mind that I’m the one who picked out the “nominations”. If you have fruther suggestions for a video I may have missed let me know in the comment field. You can vote below, or watch all the nominated videos on this page and vote there:

Stephen Irwin’s “Erased Porn”

Here’s some artwork of Stephen Irwin’s exhibition “Sometimes When We Touch” that was shown at the Invisible-Exports gallery in New York City this month. The pictures are taken out of vintage porn magazines and the explicit parts of them are erased. The website The Sword, my source for these pictures, also posted this link to an article about “Erased Porn” as a genre, but I  think I’ll refuse to take this whole thing too serious.

Hail, Madonna!

madonna-illuminati

The internet is full of postings and videos by people who are sure that because of her belive in Kabbalah Madonna is either a satanist, or, as a freemanson, part of a jewish world conspiracy. I especially like the theory that the famous french kissing performance she did with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the VMA awards in 2003 was actually a Freemansonic ritual in which Madonna herself incorporates the devil. I quote from the platform www.scam.com:  “(There’s) the pyramid, the 13 stairs, the masonic black and white square floor, the sun representation with stars, the stargate around it, the male (Madonna) – female (Britney, Xtina), the sexual representation wedding of 3 people. The Leader (Madonna) accepts the rookies (Britney and Xtina), the black and white representation is really revealing. And I know for sure there’s more, way more.” Watch the following videos to learn more about this. They’re made by people who know what the world really works like.

More Music: Great Synthie Pop By Logan Lynn And Delphic

New queer music icon Logan Lynn has just released the physical version of his album “A Pillar To Post” on Beat The World Records. Below the nice video to “Bottom Your Way To The Top” you find a player with more songs of the album, just beause the single seems to be one of the weaker songs on the album.

———————————————————————————–

Delphic is a band from Manchester that is going to release its debut record “Acolyte” which is produced by Ewan Pearson in February next year. I saw them play live yesterday at a Kitsuné label night and they really made my evening. You can listen to their other already released single “This Momentary” and their upcoming one called “Doubt” on their Myspace page.

Redefined: Yeasayer

yeahsayer

With their new album Yeasayer are moving away from what the music press was mostly perceived as some kind of hipster world music, instead they’ve wrapped their music in a new shiny electric robe. And it suits them really good. The album is released in February, the song “Ampling Alp” can be downloaded for free on the bands Myspace page. And here’s the impressive new video.

Music Ticker: Fever Ray, Salem, Kelis, Current 93 / Antony / Matmos

+++ The notorious Fever Ray has got another nice video out. It’s not as inpressive as the ones before, but still  well done. Watch it via Pitchfork +++

+++ Salem has contributed another distrubing and at the same time appealing mix to the We Make It Good mix series. Click here for the download and here for the description and the track list (via Gorilla vs. Bear) +++

+++ There is a new song by Kelis called “Acapella” which is, belive it or not, a pumping electro dance tune. Listen to it on her webpage. I think I like it +++

+++ Not new but still great: the video of Matmos’ remix of  “The Beautiful Dancing Dust” by Current 93 feat. Antony Hegarty. Found on pull!

3 Zines You May Not Know Yet

At least I didn’t… Here we go:

thebeef

The Beef is a free pdf-Zine by Alejandro Gallo & Francisco Castro who also do an “anti-activism” site called Pride is dead. I don’t know where these guys are from, but while their website is both in English and Spanish their nicely designed Zine is completely written in Spanish, which is kind of sad since it’s content looks pretty interesting. But at least they feature some nice picture series that are worth having a look at.

capa10

WOOF! magazine is from Sao Paulot that can also be downloaded for free on its webpage. Each issue is dedicated a certain theme – the current one’s (#10) focuses on fetishes. The makes of Woof! seem to have a pretty open horizon sexually, so don’t be surprised if you actually find WOMEN in this Zine (for the gay stuff scroll down to the second half in the current issue). That the magazine is completly written in Portugese is not so much a problem here, since for most parts it consists of photo series.

Pink Mince Zine from London looks pretty promising, but to have a closer look at it you have to order it from it’s very minimalist website, which is something I just did, since its makers decribe it like this: “Pink Mince is a modest little zine ‘for the confirmed bachelor of exceptional taste’ published every couple of months or so. We aim to delight, titillate, amuse, provoke, and inspire. (That is to say: we feature jokes and blokes, possibly with a point behind it all).” Sounds cool.

Boris Achour: Space Odysseys

CONATUS-TIMESCAPE-15

Boris Achour is an artist that was born in Marseille in 1966 and today lives and works in Paris. Most of his recent works are part of a series called “Conatus” for which he designes spaces that either serve as stages for performances (which mostly are recorded and turned into films or installations) or as landscapes through which the spectator can wander. Like all of his stuff the “episodes” of this series are highly influenced by Achours strong relationship to cinema, which for him is a media that “succeeded in creating a very strange synthesis of the avant-garde and the common (or everyday, it is), a medium which permits gaps”. What he means by that you can see in “AMINDSUMMERNIGHTSDREAM” from last year, a fictional documentary about a community of colorful masked people that explore the woods and live under a silver dome (posted below). More about monsieur on his website or on his vimeo channel. I also recommend TR1ANGL3, a performance video for which he collaborated with Joakim.
